Keepin on keepin on!

Yesterday was a pretty good day. I allowed myself to do some vegging out the night before and to sleep in the next morning, giving a glorious 10 hours of sleep. Oodelally!  Then I was done with scheduled things (internship, class) at 3pm so I was able to go home and get myself together.

Next week I will be traveling all week.  First I'll head to Arts Advocacy Day in Washington DC to make the case that funding for the arts isn't a nice-to-have luxury, it's an essential investment in our future. (When Winston Churchill was asked to cut arts funding in favor of the war effort, he simply replied "then what are we fighting for?") Then, I head to New York for a job interview and to meet with my blogging colleagues that I've never met. After that, I'm headed to a conference in Harrisburg, PA called "Heritage and the State." Then I finally get home next Saturday. Phew!

So I have a question for you guys. I'll be out of town for my weigh-in next Friday. Should I weigh in Sunday morning, when I'll be home at my scale? Or should I wait til the following Friday?

Burnin the Midnight Oil . . .

Well, I knew it was going to be a busy week, and it's living up to my expectations. Thankfully, I did get a lot done yesterday. But as of right now, I've had about 14 hours of sleep over the last 3 nights. This morning I have a mild headache and now I'm worried that if I don't start getting more sleep, I might get sick. But I just don't know how else to get everything done this week.

Food-wise, I didn't do too badly yesterday. I used too much olive oil in cooking last night. I need to remember to use the cooking spray instead.

Back on Track

Well, I did not track Friday or Saturday. I'm not really sure why-tired of tracking things? Wanting to cut loose?  I didn't go crazy though, except for Saturday night, which I'll get to later.  For some reason I never felt like going to bed--so I didn't. Lol. I stayed up almost all night just puttering around on the computer and watching TV. Not my finest hour. Plus I kept going back into the kitchen for snacks :-/. Nothing terrible, because I don't have anything terrible in stock, but still, way more than I needed to.

Yesterday I realized just how much I have to do before I leave Sunday to go out of town. It's pretty overwhelming. Yesterday I sat down and made a list of what I need to do and how long I think it will take me to do each item. Then I parsed it out throughout the week. I don't think I'll have time to work out at all this week, which disappoints me. I will also not be getting my customary 8 hours of sleep a night, which worries me. I should have seen this coming and started on a lot of this stuff last week. Ah, well.

Wish me luck this week!

Trivia Night

Yesterday I had at least 2 out of 3 for "real food" meals- lunch was a couple of free half wraps left over from some kind of event. I am a sucker for free food, and I hadn't brought my lunch with me, so even though I didn't know what exactly was in them, I grabbed them. They couldn't be that bad, right?

KILLER workout today. I'm trying to make up in activity points what I went over this weekend. I was real tired after it!

I'm also proud of logging my points before I left and seeing how many I had left to spend at the bar tonight.

The post I've been working on for 2 months is finally out! Please read it here- it's about how folklorists helped a local arts agency.

Today at my workout I really booked it on the elliptical. My friend Karl (who is acting as my trainer- thanks Karl!) was proud of me for pushing myself. He helped me do some bicep curls and was like "OK you did the 5, let's see if you can do the 7.5." "OK, you did two with that 7.5, can you do one with the 10? Let's do it." And I'm like, "Karl, it's hard" and he says "It's called a work-out! Not a play-out!" lol. He's really good to push me- now I know what kind of intensity I'm looking for.

At lunch I was able to go to a panel discussion on food sustainability. It was really interesting. They explained why local food is sometimes more expensive than supermarket food--it's all about the distribution. Big industrial farms in California and the like already have all the systems in place to get all the food they grow to market. But smaller local farmers don't. It takes them a lot more time and effort to find a buyer. So it's often easier for them to sell things to a wholesaler who will ship their food anywhere in the world than find someone local to sell to. They also talked about "food deserts", places in urban areas where there's no grocery store, so people rely on really unhealthy convenience store foods. A lady from Grow Pittsburgh was there talking about their edible schoolyard program. Also, the head of Sustainability at Eat'n'Park was there (link to his blog here). He said that they source 20% of their food from local sources in the areas they operate. I thought that was pretty cool!

Back to Reality

Today I really watched what I ate at breakfast, lunch, and dinner to make up for the weekend. I did pretty well, if not getting in all my healthies. I had a lot of points left (I wasn't really that hungry) and I did have a cookie. Oh, well. I earned 4 activity points digging in the garden. It was a beautiful day here yesterday.

What I'm really struggling with right now is my schedule. I have SO much to do between my internship, classes, applying for jobs, and writing for a blog (www.createquity.com), I'm not making time to cook. As a result, I'm putting together random things to make meals. I just need to take 30 minutes to find a recipe and go to the grocery store to get the things I need, I guess.

Total Fail . . .

So this weekend was a ton of fun, but I used up all of my points for the week and then some. I guess I was just tired of tracking everything. Also, I baked cookies, which turned out to be a MAJOR trigger food for me. I thought I could just have one, but the dough, the dough! It was not to be resisted. And I wanted to eat the same things my friends were eating.

I am feelin pretty crappy about going 18 points over already this week. The rest of the week will have to be a lot of activity points and sticking only to my daily points. I'm not sure if you can make up for things like this by earning activity points after the fact or what.

One bright spot- it was all real food. Since I was the one cooking, I made sure everything was at least unprocessed, even if there was a lot of it.

Ugh but I do need some encouragement right now! Have you ever had a terrible weekend like this, and were you able to recover from it?

Road Trip!

Yesterday I left town to go on a retreat with a few of my friends. They're doing a group project and asked me to come along to be the cook. Yay! This morning I'm looking out on a beautiful lake, watching the sun come up. Some days it's just good to be alive :-).

I took my time getting ready this morning, so it was 11am by the time I was ready for breakfast. I decided to have brunch, so I had two eggs instead of my usual one, with toast and a nectarine. Yummy.

I got hungry on the way there so I broke into the granola bars I had brought as snacks. Then I fixed a seafood stir-fry that was sooo good! I know the tracker says chicken, but I had already entered the recipe and was too lazy to change it to seafood for this once. I figure it should be about the same (right?). For dessert I dished up fresh cut pineapple and mango with good vanilla ice cream. It was decadent :-)

My challenge today is going to be avoiding snacking a lot. I brought fairly healthy food to cook (or at least, real food), but there is a lot of it around since I'm cooking for 7 people.

How to manage a hectic schedule? plus Weigh In!

So! Yesterday started off great, but kinda went downhill. I had my delicious breakfast creme in the morning, which I got fromMireille Guiliano, the french woman who doesn't get fat. It's a half cup of greek yogurt (I use 2% Fage), 6 mini squares of shredded wheat, crumbled, 1/4 ounce of chopped nuts (this morning was hazelnuts . . . mm), 1 tsp of honey, and 1 tbsp of lemon juice. Soo good! Merci, Mireille.

I haven't had time this week to cook, so I was still cobbling together lunches out of the random things I bought at the grocery store. It wasn't a bad lunch, though. Then there were free pita wraps leftover from some lunch. I had forgotten to bring something to eat before my night class, and it looked not bad for me, so I took one. Then looked at the points. Ugh! Free food is always my undoing.

After night class, I got home and ate a few "small" things. I do love that bread though, y'all. And it's good for me, so I don't feel bad eating it.

I worked some more today in the garden! I planted some peas, spinach, and lettuces. I hope no birds eat the seeds this weekend while I'm out of town :-/. I need to go shopping for wire mesh to keep them out.

Oh yeah! I weighed in this morning- down 1.2 lbs! Yaay!

This weekend I'm going with a group of friends on a "retreat" for a school project. I'm not in their group, I'm going as the chef :-). So it should be fun, but with a bunch of snacks lying around, a little tempting. I'll bring my running shoes so I can get some activitiy in. I'm really looking forward to it, it's at a friend's lake cabin in Maryland and the views are just amazing.

Next week I've got to make time to cook something and plan out what I'm going to eat a little more so I'm not throwing things together at the last minute.

How do you manage your hectic schedule?

Thursday, March 17, 2011

What a day.

Yesterday was long and frustrating. I went in early for an 8am presentation (hence the bagel). Then I went to a site visit to a really cool organization, but our guide talked so much that I didn't have time to eat before my next class. I passed an Arby's on the way and decided to get a quick salad. I was starving by this time (it was about 1pm). I got to class at 1:30 and opened my salad. What a disappointment. I was expecting nice greens, grape tomatoes, chunks of grilled chicken, and hard boiled egg. What I got was iceberg lettuce, slivers of tomato and onion, lunchmeat chicken and some shredded cheese. I finished it and was still starving.

I had planned on going to the gym after class but I couldn't work out with my stomach still feeling like that. So I went to the student convenience store and bought a big thing of edamame. Oh my gosh sweet glorious protein. I felt so much better. I met my friend and he showed me thigh exercises, but by the time he was done, I only had 15 minutes to work out before my next meeting. So, I walked for 5 minutes on the treadmill (just to get used to a treadmill- they usually scare me!). Then I did 10 minutes of the machines.

After my meeting, when I got home, I started working on a project that is a favor for a friend. I wasn't hungry at all because of all the edamame. I worked for about 2-3 hours only to get a text later that half of my work had been in vain. I was pretty angry, so I called a friend to vent and put some liquor in my tea. I still wasn't that hungry but didn't want to be starving in the morning, so I had a few (what I thought were) little things.

I tried to make the best choices I could today, but it didn't really work out. At least today is the last day of the week and I know that I won't go over my points.

So Tired . . .

Yesterday was a long day. I had one thing after another- my internship, class, workout, meeting, another class, home. I was nodding off after lunch and then when I finally got home at about 9pm I was hungry and pooped! I ate a pretty healthy dinner, I think, but I was still "peckish" about 30 minutes after dinner so I fixed myself some popcorn. I love popcorn :-). I put some herbes de provence (rosemary, thyme, marjoram, etc) in with the butter and it was sooo good!

Surprisingly today it's my legs that are a little sore. Must have been the elliptical. Today we're going to to legs, so I hope I won't be wobbly tomorrow!

Gardening is Hard Work!

Yesterday was a really great day. I don't have any classes on Monday, and I don't have very much to do until my classes start Tuesday. So I got to work out yesterday morning, take my time, go grocery shopping, and start in my garden. I dug 3 beds in 3 hours. It was hard work! But it was nice to be outside, and I got to see about a dozen deer as they passed by the woods next to my garden. That was pretty cool :-)
Post Image

When I got home, I was starving. Despite going grocery shopping, I couldn't think of anything to prepare, so I had a "tapas" dinner of a bunch of little things. It was all healthy stuff, no junk, but I had no idea it would be so many points! Particularly surprising was the Fruited Grain Salad my roommate made. It was a bunch of grains like wheat berries and bulgur with vegetables and dried and fresh fruit. It was so high in fiber (14 g!) I thought it would be low in points. Ah, well. At least today I had the activity points to cover it.

I also need to "tsk" myself for the peanut butter cups. Just because they're from Trader Joe's doesn't mean they're real food! I looked on the package this morning and there sure are a lot of ingredients. Another lesson learned. After this, I may start tracking the points before I eat.

On the Road

The past two days I've been on the road going back to school from my home (spring break). Here's how it went:

Day 1

So today I was on the road all day. I tried to choose things that are both real foods and healthy for me. I thought I was doing pretty good. Then I entered everything into the tracker- I was over by 20 points!! Things are a lot more "expensive" than I thought!

One of my big mistakes today was buying a fruit and nut mix. One serving would have been fine- I would have only been over by 4 points. Instead I had five servings and was over by 20! Lesson learned- trail mix eaten straight from the bag while driving is not a good idea.

Day 2

Today was the second day on the road. I finally arrive home at around 8 pm, yay!

I did much better today, although I still went over my points. When I got home, I didn't have much in the refrigerator, so I had a dinner out of the freezer. Still not too bad, though.

Hello, Old Friend

Well hey there, Weight Watchers.

We had our halcyon days together, back when you helped me lose that Undergrad 25. You were perfect for me then. But afterwards I saw your flaws . . . you enabled, even encouraged me to eat fake foods with artificial sweeteners. Reduced fat everything. Chemicals everywhere. I left you. I wanted something better.

I tried it on my own, but losing weight and eating real food was hard by myself. Without you around, I couldn't set limits for myself. The snacking went on forever. While it was a delicious time, all good things must come to an end.

So now I'm coming back to you. I see you've changed--a new formulation for points that doesn't involve calories. What a turnaround! Some say you've made it easier to eat real foods and lose weight. I'm willing to give you a second chance, old friend. This time, to lose the Grad 10. And to do it deliciously, with real foods.

I'm excited, but nervous. I'm afraid of yet another failure. But, I believe in taking risks in the name of love of food. I believe in second chances! I take you back, Weight Watchers. Come here, you!
